Spanish Prime Minister Visits Tianjin

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar Tuesday visited the north China port city of Tianjin, now home to 36 Spanish joint ventures.

Tianjin Mayor Li Shenglin told Aznar that the business circles of Tianjin and Spain have maintained good relations, especially in recent years, and trade cooperation between the two sides has developed rapidly.

He said Spain's three dozen joint ventures in the city represent a total investment of 30 million US dollars. The mayor said he hoped that the visit will promote the cooperation between Tianjin and Spain.

Aznar said that the Spanish government has viewed China's economic development in a positive light and values the relationship between Spain and Tianjin. He hoped that the local government would give more support to the Spanish joint ventures.

The Spanish guests also visited a local vegetable research institute, and the Cola Cao Food (Tianjin) Ltd.

The Cola Cao Food (Tianjin) Ltd. is a joint venture of the Nutrexpa International Co, Ltd. of Spain and the Tianjin Limin Food Factory, established in March 1996.

During Aznar's stay in Tianjin, the two sides signed five letters of intent and agreements on transportation, environment, subways, containers and other areas.
