China Confers State Award to Brazilian Expert

Zhu Lilan, minister of Science and Technology, conferred in Beijing Tuesday evening the state international scientific and technological cooperation award to Jose Albert de Camargo from Brazil for his contributions to Sino- Brazilian cooperation in the iron and steel industry.

Jose Albert de Camargo from Brazil, president of the Brazilian Metallurgical Mining Company, has been working for 20 years to help strengthen cooperative ties between Brazil and China in the field of iron and steel.

Since 1979 he has made a significant contribution to China's development and production of high-strength and low-alloy steel using columbium, a raw material widely used in high-tech products.

The other three 1999 state international scientific and technological cooperation award winners are Umberto Colombo from Italy, Shoiuyichi Yishimoto from Japan and Rita Colwell from the United States.

The annual state international scientific and technological cooperation award was established by the State Council to honor foreign experts who make outstanding contributions to China's scientific development.

Since 1995, a total of 18 foreign experts have won the prize.
