Hong Kong Residents Satisfied With PLA Troops: PollA poll conducted recently by Hong Kong media shows that 93 percent of Hong Kong residents are satisfied with the performance of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops stationed in the region. The ground, naval and air forces of the PLA in Hong Kong have done an "excellent" job and fulfilled their defense tasks over the past three years, the survey found. The PLA troops came to Hong Kong after its return to China on July 1, 1997. The troops have strictly carried out the instructions of Chinese President Jiang Zemin and followed the rules of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Military Commission. No soldier has done anything to sully the image of the PLA, and the troops have earned the respect of local residents for their fine performance, the poll determined. Over the past three years, the troops conducted many drills after the approval of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Regional govenment. The troops also helped the local government to maintain social security and combat natural disasters. After their arrival in Hong Kong, the soldiers strictly abided by the rules and regulations of the PLA and showed deference for the lifestyle and customs of local people. They also participated in various social activities, including planting trees and flowers and donating blood for Hong Kong residents.
