HK Govt Calls on Registered Voters to Support LegCo Elections

Hong Kong's Deputy Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Robin Ip Wednesday called on the registered voters to show full support to the second Legislative Council ( LegCo) Elections of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ( SAR).

He also urged the 168,000 subsector voters to cast their votes on July 9 and elect Election Committee (EC) members to represent their interests.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2000 LegCo Elections roving exhibition at the Times Square in Causeway Bay, Ip said that the EC subsector elections held next Sunday were the first stage of the September LegCo elections. The EC returned would be responsible for electing six LegCo members in September.

"In the first LegCo elections held in 1998, many Hong Kong people braved strong wind and heavy rain to get to the polling stations to cast their votes on the polling day, raising the voter turnout rate to an unprecedented level of 53 percent.

"I earnestly hope that the majority of the registered electors will again show their full support to the coming LegCo elections, just as they did in 1998," Ip said.

To enhance electors' understanding of and arouse their interest in the coming elections, roving exhibition is again organized to explain the electoral arrangement. The exhibition will be staged in major shopping arcades in the Hong Kong SAR.
