East China Builds Dual-Frequency Mobile Telecom Network

Zhejiang Mobile Telecom in east China signed a contract today with four other telecom companies to build a dual-frequency mobile telecom network.

The project is to improve voice transmission quality, to develop mobile Internet technology, and to support WAP (wireless application protocol) mobile phones and short message sending.

The financing of 1.1 billion yuan (about 132 million U.S. dollars) came from five parties, including mobile phone developers Nokia and Siemens.

When finished at the end of this year, the capacity of the new network will total 10 million exchange lines and seven million mobile phone lines.

There are now four million mobile phone users in the eastern province.
