Li Peng Meets Ukrainian Counterpart on Bilateral TiesLi Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with Chairman of the Ukrainian Supreme Council, Ivan Plyushch, on bilateral ties, cooperation between the two parliaments and the international situation.Extending his warm welcome to Li, Plyushch said Li's visit marks a major event in the course of Ukrainian-Chinese relations of recent years. Noting the frequent exchanges between the two parliaments, Plyushch said China's achievements in all fields had left him a deep impression when he visited the country. A NPC friendship group also visited Ukraine not long ago, he added. The top legislator stressed such exchanges are indispensable in promoting the overall development of Ukrainian-Chinese relations. Many senior professionals in the Ukrainian parliament can also help cement bilateral ties. In his part, Li appreciated the traditional profound friendship between Ukraine and China, regarding it as a wealth in the bilateral relations. Since the two countries established the diplomatic ties in 1992, bilateral relations have developed in all areas and affluent fruits yielded in cooperation in politics, economy, science and technology, culture and education, he said. Li said China attaches great importance to Sino-Ukrainian relations. The two countries have no conflict of interests but enjoy the same and similar stands on many international and regional issues. They support and cooperate with each other on the international stage. Li expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Ukraine's right stand and its support to China on the issues of human rights, Taiwan and Tibet. Plyushch held a welcome banquet in honor of Li Peng and his wife Zhu Lin after the talks. |
