Japan on Alert for Volcano Eruption

Stronger earthquakes rattled a small Japanese island in the Pacific on Tuesday, and 2,500 people have been evacuated from their homes amid warnings of a possible volcanic eruption. The evacuation was ordered late Monday on Miyakejima, 120 miles south of Tokyo, after a series of mild earthquakes suggested volcanic activity. The area around Miyakejima is volcanic, and Mount Oyama, a volcano on the island, has had several major eruptions this century.
