Three People Arrested for SW China Boat Accident

Three people allegedly responsible for the boat accident which killed some 130 people last week on the Yangtze River, near Hejiang in southwest China's Sichuan Province, were arrested on Monday by local police.

The three, including the ship's owner Liang Rubing, and its captain Zhou Shoujin, were charged with overloading the boat and dereliction of duty, which have been named as the causes of the tragedy. The identity of the third suspect, Shi Ping, however is not available.

The death toll from the accident has risen to 77, with 15 more bodies recovered. But 51 people are still missing, another report reaching Chengdu Monday said.

The bodies, 10 males and five females, are all adults, the report said. Over 100 relatives of the victims have hurried to the funeral homes to identify the bodies.

The passenger vessel Rong Jian, which had a maximum holding capacity of 101 people, was carrying 221 passengers June 22 when it hit a rock and sank while sailing in foggy conditions.
