China Firmly Against Arms Sales to Taiwan
China said Monday that it is firmly opposed to the attempt by certain countries to make arms sales to Taiwan, a Chinese province, saying that such sales not only jeopardizes China's sovereignty and security, but also poses a threat to the peace and security in Asia and Pacific.
The statement came as Shen Guofang, deputy Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, took the floor at the plenary meeting of the United Nations Disarmament Commission (UNDC), which opened here Monday and will end in two weeks.
"China is firmly opposed to the attempts by certain countries to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries by means of arms sales," Shen said.
"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China," he said. "This has been recognized by the international community."
"However, certain countries, in disregard of this fact, have been selling large amount of advanced weapons to Taiwan," he said."This action violates the principle of respecting national
sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in the U.N. Charter."
"It not only jeopardizes China's sovereignty and security, but also poses a threat to the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," he said.
This goes against the spirit of the confidence-building measures (CBMs), and "We demand countries concerned stop this wrong practice as soon as possible," he added.
China is of the view that there is only one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government of China, representing all Chinese,
including people in Taiwan, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.
