Memo Signed Between Chinese, US Mayors Associations

The second session of the Sino-USmayors symposium on city development and cooperation was held in Suzhou, Jiansu Province Monday, with discussions on strategies to develop city infrastructure.

During the symposium, Tao Siliang, secretary-general of the Chinese mayors' association, and Patrick J. McManus, trustee of US Conference of Mayors, signed a cooperation memo between the two organizations.

The symposium attracted 13 US representatives including Patrick J. McManus, mayor of Lynn, and James A. Garner, mayor of Hempstead, and 15 Chinese representatives including Suzhou Mayor Chen Deming and Wuxi Mayor Wu Xinxiong. They exchanged views on the effects of economic globalization on city development, especially the development of the ancient cities.

The memo said that the two sides will promote bilateral cooperation in water resources, environmental protection, and infrastructure development through such activities as personnel exchanges, dialogues among cities and the mayors forum.

The first session of the Sino-U.S. mayors symposium was held in Hawaii of the United States last year.
