Chongqing Develops Eco-AgricultureFacing the problem of little land, a large population and poor ecological environment in the reservoir area of the Three Gorges, Chongqing has actively developed eco-agriculture in recent years which has not only helped raise farmers' income but has also protected ecological environment in the reservoir area.To develop high-efficiency eco-agriculture, Chongqing Resettlement Office and Chongqing Southwest Agriculture University saw to it that big investments are made and high-efficiency eco-agriculture projects are launched under a "High-efficiency Eco-agriculture Development Plan in Three Gorges Reservoir Area". Following a joint development plan by China and the US, with a total investment of 580 million yuan planned, a large orange production base and fruit juice plant will be built as the largest of the country's. With this there will also be a 100,000-mu high-standard orange plantation to be developed to ease water and soil erosion in the reservoir area. Environment must be well protected of the reservoir area as is demanded by Chongqing. Vegetable growers and farmer settlers in the reservoir area are helped with new technology and grow high-efficiency pester-resistance vegetable species in the way their income is increased and no pollution is created. |
