President Jiang Zemin Meets Spanish PM
President Jiang Zemin told visiting Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar of Spain here today that he believes China-Spain relations will grow more profoundly during the prime minister's new term of office.

Jiang said during a meeting with Aznar, who arrived here Sunday on a five-day official visit to China, that China pays great attention to its friendly relations with Spain, and is willing to work together with the Spanish side to push forward bilateral relations.

The Chinese president also briefed Aznar on the country's strategy to develop its vast western areas. Aznar said that Spain is closely following China's reform and opening up policy, and is ready to study and participate in the development of China's western areas. He wished the development a success.

China and Spain have expanded their friendly cooperation and exchange in various areas, Jiang noted, citing growing trade figures, increasing exchange in cultural and educational sectors, and mutual support in many international affairs.

He said China appreciates the Spanish Government's one-China policy and its friendly attitude on many other issues. The Spanish prime minister reiterated his government's one-China policy.

Aznar told Jiang that he had very fruitful talks with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Sunday, and wishes Spain's relations with China would improve through his current visit.

Spain considers China a friend, Aznar said, adding that Spain wants to strengthen its cooperation with China in the United Nations and on other international affairs.

In addition, Aznar said Spain hopes to increase contacts with Chinese state leaders, and regularly exchange views on major international issues. Jiang agreed with him on this point.

Aznar extended to Jiang greetings from the Spanish King Juan Carlos I, and Jiang asked him to extend his best regards to the Spanish king.
