China to Decorate Korean War Symbol

China is to decorate the broken bridge on the Yalu River, which forms part of the border between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Three-colored optical fibers will be used to outline the bridge.

The colors -- yellow, white and blue -- have been selected to symbolize warmth, purity and peace, respectively. The decorating work is to be completed in September this year.

Most of the military supplies transported to the Chinese volunteer army which fought side by side with DPRK troops during the Campaign to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953) were transported across the bridge. Located in Dandong, in northeast China's Liaoning Province, the bridge was a major target of USA bombing raids, and only a 396-meter section survived the war.

The bridge took six years to build, starting in 1905. It originally had a length of 944 m and a width of 11 m.
