Vice-Premier Stresses Party's Role in SOEs

Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo Sunday emphasized the importance of Communist Party building work in State-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are urged to reform themselves and end loss-making.

Wu urged Party members in SOEs at a meeting in Beijing Sunday to study President Jiang Zemin's instruction on the Party's role. Jiang's instruction says that the Communist Party represents the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.

He asked officials in SOEs to use the instruction as an ideological weapon in advancing SOE reforms.

The Party should strengthen its leadership in SOEs, Wu said. He also urged SOEs to accelerate technological upgrading, and enhance their internal management to improve efficiency. He also stressed the importance of the social security system, saying that social protection should be improved to ensure the stability of enterprises and the society at large.
