Sichuan Shipwreck: 17 Dead, 90 Rescued, 110 Missing

A total of 90 people had been rescued from the Yangtze River in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, following the sinking of a passenger ship which ran into a rock in foggy conditions Thursday.

By late last night (Friday), local officials and rescuers are still searching for 110 missing passengers, according to Huang Zhiling, China Daily staff reporter covering the event on the spot.

He quoted local officials as saying the ship was carrying 221 people when the accident occurred in turbulent waters when it headed for a local trade fair in Hejiang Country, Sichuan Province.

Officials said 17 passengers have been confirmed dead and their bodies have been found.

Still, some 110 are missing, according to the governments of the Luzhou City and Hejiang County.

Rescue work continued after daybreak early Saturday, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
