China to Add One Million On-Line Enterprises in One Year

China will connect more than one million enterprises with the Internet within one year, in an effort to sharpen the competitive edge of these companies in the global market.

Included will be one million small enterprises, 10,000 medium- sized enterprises and 100 large firms, according to a grand plan mapped out by the Ministry of Information Industry and the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC).

The plan will be officially kicked off after a national teleconference at the end of this month, sources say.

According to the plan, the number of on-line enterprises will double in the next three years.

This is the second step in China's three-step campaign to accelerate information construction and enter the Internet society, following a governmental on-line project, authorities noted. The third step is to increase the number of families on-line.

The SETC officials said that by joining the Internet, enterprises can promote management, set up a modern enterprise system, and become more competitive in the market.

To achieve the goal, China's telecommunication departments will speed up the pace of basic network construction and multi-media telecom networks, provide a safe, reliable and fast network environment, and encourage enterprises to use e-commerce.

Quite a few famous domestic conglomerates, in the sectors of oil, automobile, iron and steel, film, air-conditioners, and aircraft manufacturing, will be the first on-line enterprises.
