Tibet's First Communication Optical Cable-Laying Project Completed

The communication optical cable which is the world's highest above sea level, the trunk line laying project stretching from Kangmar to Tingri, was completed recently in Tibet.

In the Himalayan mountain ridge areas in southwest Tibet, the communication conditions there, long remained in a backward state, have restrained local economic construction and social development. Seizing the favorable opportunity offered by the large-scale development of the western region, theTibet Autonomous Region and Tibetan Military Area Command have decided to lay a communication optical cable up to the "Roof of the World" in accordance with the principle of "building the project through the joint efforts of, and sharing the accomplished project by, the army and the people".

This 324-km communication optical cable line, starting from Kangmar in the east, via Camba, Sa'gya and other counties, reaches Tingri County at the foot of the Mount Qomolangma in the west. It passes precipitous mountains and crisscross rivers, with an average elevation of over 5,000 meters, this makes construction condition very harsh. In early May this year, The Tibetan Military Area Command moved upon orders one thousand officers and soldiers as well as some machines and vehicles to pitch into the intense construction work. Braving blizzard and the bitter cold weather, and overcoming oxygen-deficiency in the plateau, the strong ultraviolet radiation and other difficulties, the officers and soldiers finally fulfilled the construction task both quantitatively and qualitatively in 30 days ahead of time.
