HK Consumer Price Remains Moderate in May

Hong Kong's consumer price this May remained moderate with a slight rise of 0.1 percent, according to the region's price index figures released Thursday by the Census and Statistics Department.

Figures showed that the consumer prices in overall terms registered a year-on-year rate of decrease of 4.5 percent in May, slightly larger than the 4.4 percent fall in April.

A Government Secretariat spokesman noted that consumer prices remained generally down, as retailers continued to offer significant price discounts on a wide range of commodity items.

Yet the decreases in consumer prices in April and May were smaller than those recorded earlier in the year. While the adjustment in local prices was continuing, there was some renewed price pressure from external sources upon the recent pick-up in world commodity prices.
