Five More Bodies Recovered from Air Crash Site

Five more bodies were salvaged Friday morning from the Hanjiang River, a tributary of the mighty Yangtze, following Thursday's air crash on the riverbank near the suburbs of Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province.

The bodies have not yet been identified, said sources from the air crash site.

A Chinese-made Yun-7 passenger aircraft of Wuhan Airlines departed from Enshi city to the provincial capital of Wuhan yesterday afternoon, and crashed shortly before arrival, killing all four crew members and 38 passengers aboard.

The sources believe the plane was struck by lightning during its descent, and then exploded mid-air and crashed near Sitai Village outside of Wuhan.

The dismembered bodies of the passengers were swiftly packed into body bags and sent to an unidentified location where they will be held for further identification.

Only one of the plane's two black boxes has been recovered.

An investigation into the cause of the tragedy is underway, and recovery efforts are continuing, the sources said.

Meanwhile, seven local people who were on the ground at the time of the accident were reportedly swept into the river by the crash impact. No further details were available from the crash site.

In accordance with the requirements of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, all of Wuhan Airlines' six other Yun-7 planes will be suspended from service until the cause of the crash is determined.
