Security Situation Worsening in Kosovo, Says UNHCR

The security situation in Kosovo continues to worsen, with an increasing number of murders, attacks on individuals and arson cases occurring, according to Makissino Hara, a U.N. spokeswoman.

Hara, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), made the remarks at a press conference in Belgrade, the capital of Yugoslavia Thursday.

The lack of freedom of movement, and a decreasing number of public installations, including medical and educational facilities, are all concerns in Kosovo, she added.

With the security situation in Kosovo worsening, it is not yet the right time for non-Albanian refugees to return to their homes in Kosovo, Hara noted.

She also said that as an effort to improve the security situation in Kosovo, the Office of UNHCR, joined by the Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to Kosovo, will set up a regional institution to provide more public services, mainly in the educational area. Common education policy, multi-national classes, and a multi-lingual policy will be pursued.

The United Nations will continue to provide food and other daily necessities to the residents in Kosovo, and to help establish links between Serb communities, she said.
