Repair of Ancient City Wall Completed

An eight-year-project to repair the eastern gate tower of the city wall built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has been completed.

The 48,000-U.S. dollar project recovered the original styles and features of the ancient city wall when it was built more than 600 years ago.

Xi'an, the capital of 12 dynasties in the Chinese history, has 3,000 historical sites. The 14-km-long ancient city wall is now the best preserved city wall in the world.

The Changle Gate Tower, the eastern gate tower of the ancient city wall, has been damaged many times, especially during times of war.

The repair project started in 1992 when the gate tower tilted more than 10 degrees, part of the roofing collapsed and some of the roof beams were broken.
