NPC Vice-Chairman Inspects Northeastern Province

Tian Jiyun, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), has urged localities to continue focusing on developing the economy and promoting the reform and opening-up drive.

Efforts should be made to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, Tian said in an inspection tour in northeastern Heilongjiang Province from June 12-22.

The senior legislator visited a number of villages and enterprises in Harbin, the provincial capital, and several other cities.

In his talks with local people, Tian urged local farmers to develop efficient agriculture.

While deepening the reform of state-owned enterprises, efforts should be made to develop the private sector, Tian said.

He praised local governments for their achievements in preventing forest fire and planting tree in areas devastated by a catastrophic forest fire in 1987.

Heilongjiang should make greater efforts to develop border trade with neighboring countries, he said.
