New Hi-tech Industries in Shandong

East China's Shandong Province has developed its hi-tech industries.

The hi-tech sector now accounts for 12.5 percent of local industrial added value. Electronic information has become the largest contributor to economic growth in Shandong. Last year the output value was 65.6 billion yuan.

Bio-technique industry and a number of local pharmaceutical plants have become mainstay producers nationwide.

The province has been ranked first nationwide in the development of new materials and ceramics for engineering, and has also made big progress in electron-machinery development, environment protection and energy-saving efforts.

By the end 1999, the province had 1,220 hi-tech enterprises, 95 of which had more than 100 million yuan in annual output value each. All the hi-tech enterprises had 42 billion yuan in sales in 1999 and six billion yuan in pre-tax profits in 1999.
