Romania, China Stress Further Enhancement of Relations

Romania firmly supports China's principled stand in the issues of Taiwan and Tibet, said Romanian President Emil Constantinescu Wednesday.

"Romanian-Chinese relations are of special importance," President Constantinescu said during a cordial meeting here with Buhe, vice chairman of the National People's Congress. He added that China is the first country he visited after taking office more than three years ago.

Vice Chairman Buhe conveyed Chinese President Jiang Zemin's cordial greetings to President Constantinescu, saying that he appreciated Romania's long-term position in supporting China's policy of "One China."

"Romania is China's important and reliable partner in Middle and Eastern Europe," Buhe said, hoping that such good relations will continue to develop further.

After expressing his heart-felt thanks for Chinese President Jiang Zemin's greetings, the Romanian president asked Vice Chairman Buhe to convey his good wishes and cordial greetings to President Jiang.

Since the establishment of Romanian-Chinese diplomatic ties some 50 years ago, President Constantinescu said bilateral relations "have been developing smoothly" and that visits by officials from the two countries have given an impetus to the development of improved relations.

The Romanian president called for more expansion in bilateral business ties in the years ahead and hoped that the two countries could make greater efforts to expand bilateral economic relations and trade to meet the greater demands and development of the on-going market-oriented economy.

"I'm happy to see more close exchanges between the CPPCC and the Romanian parliament," he said. Legislative organizations of the two countries should also make more regulations improving the investment climate in their respective countries to help further economic trade, he added.

The CPPCC delegation headed by Vice Chairman Buhe will return home Thursday.
