Nokia Sets up New Plant in Guangdong
Finland-based Nokia, one of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers, Wednesday put a new plant into operation in Dongguan, a city in the prospering Pearl River Delta in South China's Guangdong Province.
Located in a high-tech industrial park in the delta region, the new plant covers a floor space of 100,000 square metres and involves an investment of US$20 million.
"The operation of the new plant marks a new milestone for the localization of Nokia's development in China and it speaks for Nokia's long-term commitment to the development of China's mobile communication industry," said David Hartley, vice-president of Nokia (China) Investment Co Ltd, at the opening ceremony.
Equipped with the world's latest developed mobile phone manufacturing technologies, the operation of the project is expected to sharpen the competitive edge of Nokia's mobile communications terminals.
The new plant is also expected to help Nokia increase the export business of its products as well as the percentage of its purchase localization.
Nokia hopes that its exports this year will make up 50 per cent of its total production output and that its localized purchases will also make up 50 per cent of the total.
Nokia exported 38 per cent of its total yield in Dongguan in 1999, with the value of the exports surpassing US$1 billion.
Besides the plant, Nokia will also launch its China institute later this year, using new equipment as well as a new management system and modes, the development of Nokia's investment project in Dongguan.
So far, Nokia has invested more than US$1 billion in China, which is its second largest market worldwide.
And it has set up one stock-dominating enterprise, 20-odd representative offices, eight joint ventures, one solely owned enterprise and one global research and development centre in China.
