Northwest Airlines Collects Work by Chinese ArtistThe Northwest Airlines Corp.of the U.S. has spent 20,000 U.S. dollars on a painting by Xu Dongdong, a leading Chinese artist, to hang in its headquarters.John Dasburg, Northwest's president and chief executive, said that Xu's work is full of oriental charm and romanticism, and worth long-term preservation. Xu has also made admirable efforts to promote cultural communication between China and the U.S., said Dasburg in Shanghai, where an exhibition of Xu's works was staged recently. Xu is well-schooled in traditional Chinese painting in water and ink, and decided years ago to donate his paintings to world- famous libraries and museums. At the moment, Xu is visiting U.S. cultural institutions as an envoy of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, to make Chinese traditional art more widely known in the U.S. So far, Xu's works have been collected by more than 300 U.S. cultural institutions, including the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., New York's Metropolitan Museum and Harvard University.
