Ukraine Looking Forward to Chinese Leader's VisitUkrainian parliament Chairman Ivan Plyushch said Wednesday that he is looking forward to a visit by China's top legislator, Li Peng, and would discuss with him cooperation between the two countries and the two parliaments.Li, who is chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, will visit Ukraine on June 24-26. In a recent interview with Xinhua, Plyushch described the current economic and trade cooperation between the two countries as "positive," saying his country hopes to see continuous growth in bilateral trade. He said the two countries have a great potential for cooperation in the fields of trade, investment and defense industry. Ukraine is studying China's successful experience in economic reform and is willing to deepen economic and cultural cooperation with China, he said. On the Taiwan issue, Plyushch pledged his country will not have any official ties with Taiwan, a promise Ukraine solemnly made in 1992. "During my visit to China in 1993, I reiterated this position," he said. Considering Taiwan as an ordinary province, Ukraine maintains only non-official economic and cultural relations with it, Plyushch said. Li is on a six-nation tour, which has already taken him to Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia. He will also tour Azerbaijan.
