President Jiang Zemin Meets IBM President

President Jiang Zemin Wednesday met with Louis Gerstner, president and chairman of board of directors of the International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), and the IBM delegation.

Jiang said the development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations will benefit people of the two countries and help improve bilateral relations between China and the United States.

The Chinese president expressed appreciation for IBM's economic and technological cooperation with the Chinese information industry. He said he hopes that IBM and its Chinese partners will work together to raise the cooperation to a higher level. Gerstner said IBM anticipates bright prospects for China's development, and will strengthen its ties with China's information industry.

He added that IBM will actively participate in China's development of its vast western areas, and believes the effort will be successful.

Gerstner and the IBM board of directors are on a working visit to China at the invitation of the Ministry of Information Industry. They also had a conference of board members in Beijing, the first ever held in Asia.

Minister of Information Industry Wu Jichuan and Vice-Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi were present at the meeting.
