Chemical Weapons Left by Japanese Troops Found in NanjingMore than 17,600 chemical weapons, including ten kinds of toxic gas canisters, left by Japanese troops were recently discovered in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province in east China.Chinese and Japanese governments are negotiating on detailed measures to destroy the weapons, according to local officials. The chemical weapons were discovered at a construction site in Xiaguan District along the Yangtze River in late February this year. Excavation work took over 40 days. The Japanese government sent a special investigation team to Nanjing in April and May to deal with the matter. China and Japan signed a memorandum on destroying chemical weapons left by Japanese troops in China in July 1999, in which Japan clearly accepted the obligation to destroy them. In December 1937 Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then China's capital, and in the following weeks they massacred more than 300, 000 unarmed Chinese soldiers and civilians. |
