Vice-Premier Urges Acceleration of Education System Reform

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing has urged the speeding up of the reform of the country's education system so as to foster more high-quality professionals and serve economic and social development.

Li made the call during a tour of eastern China's Zhejiang Province June 15-20. During his stay, Li visited a number of schools and institutions, and held talks with local officials and experts to discuss relevant issues.

China should implement reforms and renovations regarding educational concepts and structures, as well as the contents and methods of teaching, Li said.

He emphasized the importance of quality education, and recommended the education of the younger generation in an all- round way. Schools at different levels and of various kinds should attach special importance to teaching ideology and ethics, he said.

He called for an overhaul of recreational places of various kinds to create a sound environment for the launching of quality education.
