China Firmly Opposes Taiwan Independence, SeparationSome party members from the Taiwan Democratic Progress Party (DPP) have recently proposed abolishing the party program advocating ``independence" for Taiwan at its ninth plenary session scheduled for mid-July, which reflects the voice of people of insight within the Party. The Fifth Congress of the DPP passed a resolution on October 13, 1991, which added in the party program the words "establish the Republic of Taiwan and a new constitution based on independent sovereignty and put to a referendum by all Taiwan residents". That was the "Taiwan Independence Article" contained in the Party program of the DPP, a flagrant act aimed at splitting China. A spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council pointed out on October 14, 1991 that the "Taiwan Independence Article" was only a farce played by the few stubborn separatists within the DPP, and did not represent the will of all the DPP members. Taiwan has all along been a part of China. The Chinese government and people will firmly adhere to the "One China" principle, and will absolutely not tolerate the separation or `` independence" of Taiwan. The "One China" principle is the basis and prerequisite for peaceful reunification, which is China's staunch stance on the Taiwan issue. Whether or not the Ninth Plenary Session of DPP will obey the will of the majority and abolish the Party program of "Taiwan Independence" will be a test of whether the DPP is sincere in its protestations that it wishes to improve the relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. |
