Drug Prohibition Will Last As Long As It Exists

June 26 is the annual International Drug-prohibition Day. On that day each year, people's courts in various localities will pronounce a number of major drug-related cases and severely punish a group of major drug-related criminals. But the anti-drug struggle is not confined to that day. Our attitude toward this issue is clear-cut and resolute: Prohibition against drug will not cease as long as it exists.

Drug jeopardizes one's life and health, at the same time it is a hotbed breeding corruption and crimes and even endangering the future and destiny of the nation and the country. Dealing a resolute and severe blow at drug-related crimes is the consistent determination and policy of the Chinese government.

In modern times, the depth China was poisoned by drug and the price it paid for it is rarely seen in human history. In modern history, in the face of opium, we had sustained the disgrace of humiliating the country and forfeiting sovereignty, and ceding territory and paying indemnities. Today, drugs, once extinct, have emerged again from ashes and have been spreading ceaselessly, bringing about extremely serious disasters to the Chinese people and society. According to the latest statistics from the department concerned, the number of drug-takers in China has increased on an annual basis. The area involved in drug-abusing practice is expanding, drug-related criminal cases continue to rise, narcotic drugs have brought mounting harms to society, the drug-takers are mostly men as robbers and women prostitutes, as a result, their families are broken up and family members are dead; drug-related crime is usually an important cause of many serious criminal offences and public security problems; criminal cases sparked by the drug problem have generally increased in various localities. Drug-takers are mostly HIV-carriers and disseminators.

Comrade Jiang Zemin once incisively pointed out, "Failing to solve the drug-trafficking and drug-taking problem is, in a certain sense, an issue concerning the rise and decline of the Chinese nation. This is not an alarmist talk, the issue must be understood at such a high plane."

We should soberly notice that despite the forceful strike, the tendency of the spread of drug-related crimes has not been held in check. Of course, there are many reasons for this, but the important one is that the drugs from outside have infiltrated into the vast areas of the hinterland through various transmission channels. While grabbing exorbitant profits, drug-traffickers have stimulated increase in the consumption demand for drug which has, in turn, vigorously spurred the further proliferation of drugs, forming a vicious circle. .For this reason, in cracking down on drug-related crimes, we must introduce the measures of comprehensive treatment, and grasp the two combinations: first, combining attack with prevention to stop up the source of drugs and block all transmission channels; second, combining judicial organizations with the masses of the people to form an atmosphere featuring collective wisdom, effort and precaution.

Drug-prohibition is a long-term and arduous struggle, which involves heavy tasks and a long way to go, as well as the responsibility of every member of the whole society. For the children bogged down in the sea of drugs, for mothers who have drained away their tears, for our brothers, for the millions of families and for our motherland, let's unite as one and make common efforts to fight a people's war against narcotic drugs.
