Diabetes Website Launched in Beijing

A website dedicated to diabetes- related information was launched on June 20.

Logging onto www.tang-an.com.cn or www.diabetes-china.com, Internet surfers can get the latest information about diabetes prevention, therapies and medical research. They can also enjoy online purchase of certain medicines and health-promotion products.

The Beijing Tang-An Nutrition and Healthcare Products Co. Ltd, which launched the website, expected the Internet-based service to eventually reach more than three million potential diabetes sufferers in China.

Causing more than 170 billion yuan (about 20 billion U.S. dollars) in medical expenditure each year, the disease has become the third most serious chronic disease in the country, following cardio- and cerebral-vascular illnesses and cancer.

"It has become an urgent task for us to let more people know disease prevention," said Shao Ruitai, an official in charge of disease control at the Ministry of Health.

Tang-An has devoted itself to the control of diabetes since it was founded in 1997, said Dr. Cheng Nanzheng, president and CEO of Tang-An.

"We have held more than 800 lectures for a total of 500,000 people in over 110 Chinese cities. Now Internet technology enables us to pass the information to more people more rapidly and effectively," she said.
