China Tackles Environmental ProblemsShanghai will investigate the sources of polluted water in a move to improve the environment. Industrial pollution in this metropolis has been reduced through years of reform, but pollution is still on the increase.Livestock farms in the upper reaches of the city pose threats to water sources, said an environment official. The municipal government will conduct a four-month survey on the sources of pollution. Other areas have also taken measures to tackle pollution. In China's second largest oilfield Shengli in coastal Shandong province, administration officials said it has introduced foreign bio-technology to process polluted water. In east China's Anhui Province, the government is reclaiming alkali soils in a 46.6-kilometer-long stretch in Dangxian county. In Jiangxi Province, the government closed down 4,960 illegal small mines causing heavily pollution. |
