Ibis in Increased Number in ChinaBreakthrough has been made in ibis group breeding in China. Up to June 20, 72 ibis have been bred this year. Of these, 41 are by man, and 31 wild, both giving an all time high growth of the bird.Since spring this year, a serious drought is endangering the existence of wild ibis, said Zhai Tianqing, a local official in charge of the task for ibis protection. People working in the reserve center of ibis in northwest China's Shaanxi Province have been making every effort to find water resources to ensure the living of this endangered bird specie. They saw to it that plenty of loaches were bought from other counties to guarantee the birds' food. Besides, local peasants are employed to keep the birds under protection day and night, with technical advice provided. Ibis is an extremely endangered bird species in the world, only found in China's Yangxian, Shaanxi Province. Since an ibis family of 7 came to resettle in the place, they have been put under the greatest care of technical workers. Through 18 years' painstaking effort made there are already as many as 130 ibis found in the place by yearend of 1999. |
