Rich Underground Water Resources Found in China's NorthwestSince the launching of "Special Project of Prospecting for Water in the Northwest", Chinese hydrologists and geologists have found about 50 land areas richly bestowed with underground water resources to an annual usable amount of 1 billion cubic meters of water or an annual water supply from 10 new large reservoirs. More than 350 wells have been sunk and put in use, each sending up a daily amount of 665,000 cubic meters of water to a supply amount of water resources from 13 large reservoirs built.From intensive prospecting work there has already been brought to light abundant underground water resources in China's desert regions as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Underground water resources have also been found in salty water regions, with drinkable fresh water found in south Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. The work of finding underground water resources in karst regions has yielded bountiful results. Looking for water resources 700 meters deep underground in Fuping County in Shaanxi Province in 1996 is a case of these, sending up a daily amount of 13,300 cubic meters of water. Underground water has also been located in Inner Mongolia, with a daily amount of 10,000 cubic meters drawn from underground. |
