Twenty Chinese Entrepreneurs Honored in HK

Twenty Chinese Mainland entrepreneurs received the 2000 Bauhinia Outstanding Entrepreneur Awards Monday for their contribution to the advancement of commerce, industry, science and technology.

The awards are aimed to recognize outstanding entrepreneurs from the township and private sector enterprises on the Chinese mainland and to provide an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs from Hong Kong and the mainland to share the experience of success, said Poon Chung-kwong, president of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, organizer of the event.

"As China is expected to joint the World Trade Organization and with the increasing business opportunities brought forth by electronic commerce, I believe that economic activities between Hong Kong and the interior of China will be more frequent than ever before," Poon said.

To qualify for the awards, the candidates' enterprises must have a gross production or business value of over 100 million yuan (US$12 million), with an annual growth rate of more than 20 percent over the past three years.

The winners include Duan Yongji, chairman of the Stone Group Corporation, and Zhang Benzheng, president of Tsing Hua Unisplendor Corporation Ltd.

The township and private enterprises are playing an important role in China's economy. Statistics indicate that currently the township and private enterprises account for nearly a half of China's gross domestic product.
