Grain Plots in Two Rivers' Upper Reaches to be Returned to Forest
A total 11.6 million hectares of grain plots in upper reach of Yangtze River and upper and middle reaches of Yellow River will be systematically returned to forestry or grassland in the following decade to alter deteriorating ecological environment in these areas.
Started from next year, the whole project will include experimental demonstration of returning grain plots to forestry or grassland and protection of natural forest, according to the national afforestation conference called in Beijing Monday.
From 2000 to 2010, the total area to be returned forestry or grassland from grain plots will cover 11.61 million hectares, including 6.83 million hectares of artificial forestation and grass growing, in 13 provinces and autonomous regions.
As to natural forest protection, the ten years will see 11.58 million hectares of forestation, including 3.34 million hectares of hillsides closed to facilitate afforestation and 1.67 million as artificial afforestation.
