South China Helps Fishermen Move into New Homes
For the first time Chen Chengshun, a fisherman in Fu'an in south China's Fujian province, moved into a house of his own recently, His family used to live on the boat just like his ancestors generations ago.
In the past two years some 3,600 families living on boats have moved into new houses.
There were 4,125 families living on boats by the year 1997.
Starting from 1998, the provincial government of Fujian has taken efforts to help families living on boats. Ninety percent these "boat families" have moved into new houses.
"We will try to make every family who live on boats move into houses by the end of the year."
