CMC Vice-Chairman Meets Japanese Guests

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, met Monday with Yuji Fujinawa, chairman of the Council of Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Self-Defense Forces of Japan.

Zhang said Sino-Japanese relations have maintained a good momentum in recent years. He referred to the state visit paid by Chinese President Jiang Zemin in 1998.

The two sides, in the spirit of learning from history and facing the future, established a Sino-Japanese friendly and cooperative partnership devoted to peace and development. And the two countries agreed to realize the common ground that the two leaders reached when Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi visited China last year, he said.

On the problems existing between the two countries, Zhang voiced his hope that the Japanese side would follow earnestly the principles enshrined in the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and Sino- Japanese Joint Declaration on properly solving problems left over by history, including the Taiwan issue.

Zhang reaffirmed the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue. He said the settlement of the Taiwan issue is the common aspiration of all Chinese people, including the Taiwan compatriots.

The Chinese government adheres to the stand of peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems, but it will not promise to abandon the use of force.

Yuji Fujinawa said the exchanges between Japan and China in the defense field are smooth. He said he hoped that the two sides would promote dialogue and friendship, so as to strengthen their cooperation in all fields, including the military one.

He said the Japanese government's stance on the Taiwan issue was made clear in the Japanese-Chinese Joint Statement and Joint Declaration.
