Investment Grows Faster in May

The growth rate of China's investment in fixed assets increased to 9.5 percent year-on-year by the end of May, compared with a 9.3 percent growth by the end of April.

Figures released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics show that fixed assets' investment totaled 523.3 billion yuan in the first five months of the year.

Infrastructure investment grew by 4.4 percent over the same period last year to 291.1 billion yuan.

Investment in technological upgrading jumped by 19.8 percent to 93.9 billion yuan, and that in real estate maintained an growth rate of 20.8 percent over the period, totaling 117.6 billion yuan.

More money was channeled to the central and western areas of the country than to the east. Fixed assets' investment grew by 18. 4 percent and 13.7 percent respectively in central and western China, compared with 9.1 percent in eastern China.

Investment in the central and western areas accounted for more than one-third of the country's total.
