Fifty-eight Bodies Found at British PortThe bodies of 58 people thought to be asylum-seekers were found on board a truck on Monday in the English port of Dover.BBC television reported that the bodies had been found in the rear of a Dutch-registered vehicle at the port, a major landing point for ferries from France and Belgium. The BBC quoted a police spokesman as saying that two people had been found alive in the truck. "Two survivors were taken to a local hospital," the BBC quoted a spokesman as saying. There was no immediate information as to their condition. The nationalities of those found aboard the truck were not immediately known. Dover has been a major entry point for asylum-seekers, many of whom come from eastern Europe especially Albania. The British government introduced fines earlier this year for people who attempt to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country in a bid to stamp out the practice. |
