Earthquake Rocks Northern Philippine CityAn earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook the cities of San Fernando and Baguio in the northern Philippines Monday, but no damage was reported, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.In a preliminary report, the institute said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 28 kilometers northeast of San Fernando City. The tremor that is also registered at Intensity 5 in Baguio City occurred at 9:59 a.m. local time (01:59 GMT) and more aftershocks are expected, the institute said. Cesario Salvador, seismologist of the Phivolcs station in Baguio said the quake was stronger than last Wednesday's tremor registered at Intensity 3 in Baguio. Seismologists say the Phivolcs is still gathering data about the quake from its various stations in Northern Luzon. The Philippines is hit by an average of six earthquakes every day but most are too weak to be felt. |
