Compaq Increases Its Business in China

Computer giant Compaq has recently opened a Telecommunications Center in Shanghai to further explore the Chinese market.

The Compaq Telecommunications Competency Center, involving a total investment of more than two million US dollars, is mainly designed to serve Internet providers and users and electronic businesses.

This is Compaq's sixth Telecommunications Center in the world. The other five are located in the United States, France, Japan, Australia and Brazil.

In March, a Compaq e-commerce Center was established in Shanghai.

Compaq vice president Larry Schwartz said the emerging telecommunications and Internet market has been encouraging his company to increase its operations in China.

Statistics indicate that China now has 43 million mobile phone subscribers and more than 10 million Internet users. The number of mobile phone subscribers is expected to rise to 150 million by 2004.
