CPPCC Leader on Strategy of Developing West
The strategy to develop China's western regions is a long-term and complicated one and should be carried out in a planned and systematic manner.
Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made these remarks Monday at the 22nd meeting of the chairman and vice chairmen of the National Committee of the CPPCC.
The meeting was held for preparing the upcoming 10th meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee which will focus on developing China's west. Li hailed the strategy as being of great importance to the development of both western and eastern regions of China, as well as to the sustainable economic and social development of the whole country.
Since April, the CPPCC National Committee has sent several groups to conduct inspection tours to western provinces and held discussion panels with experts and scholars, according to Zheng Wantong, secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee.
The meeting also listened to a report on the recent "21st Century Forum--2000 Conference".
