Ugandan, Rwandan Forces Leave Kisangani, Congo
Uganda and Rwanda Friday began to withdraw their forces from Kisangani, a northeastern city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), after six days of ferocious clashes between the two armies.
"We have started to withdraw our forces to Banaliya, more than 100 kilometers away from the Kisangani city," Ugandan Army Spokesman Phinehas Katirima told Xinhua on Saturday.
"Within a week our withdrawal will be complete," he said, confirming that Rwandan forces have also started to move out of Kisangani.
Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council Friday unanimously adopted a resolution which demands all foreign troops, especially the Rwandan and Ugandan forces, to withdraw from the DRC.
The resolution was adopted at the end of a two-day talks between Security Council members and all the conflicting parties involved in DRC fighting.
The latest fighting, which was triggered by an attack on a vehicle of Ugandan troops on June 5, killed at least 150 civilians and wounded 1,114 others in the Kisangani city.
