Malaysian Chinese Association Calls for Racial HarmonyThe Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Saturday called on the government to take stern action against any party out to destroy the racial harmony in the country. The call was contained in one of the 17 resolutions passed by the MCA'S 47th annual general assembly, covering party affairs, politics, economy, education, religion and social matters. The resolutions also included a call to all Malaysians to give their undivided support to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in his efforts to counter all negative elements which could threaten national unity and the development of a Malaysian identity. The assembly called for stricter monitoring of privatized projects by ensuring that these projects serve the interests of the people."Otherwise, it will tarnish the image of good governance and dilute the people's confidence in the Barisan Nasional (BN) (National Front) government," the MCA said in a statement at the end of the one-day assembly. The party also wanted a more effective mechanism to monitor the tendering and offering of contracts by government agencies so that the process is just, transparent and efficiently carried out. The largest Chinese-based party called on the Education Ministry to take immediate steps to overcome the shortage of teachers in Chinese primary schools and speed up the construction of Chinese primary schools as well as the relocation of Chinese schools to Chinese-populated areas. To prevent the youth from being influenced by social ills and other negative elements, the party urged the authorities to check unhealthy activities such as drug addiction and gangsterism or even set up a task force to coordinate all efforts to counter violence and pornographic activities among the youth. Expressing concern over the current tendency toward religious fanaticism that could create fear and disunity among the multiracial and multireligious populace in the country, the party thus welcomed the move to allow non-Muslims to utilize reserve land for religious purposes in non-Muslim majority housing areas. The general assembly of the MCA, the second largest political party in Malaysia and a component of the ruling 14-party BN, was opened by Mahathir who is the BN chairman.
