Innovation Program Produces Good Results

Officials and researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences gathered to discuss the progress of the Knowledge Innovation Program on Wednesday.

The program started in 1998 and has two phases. The program, to be finished by 2010, aims to develop the academy as a national innovation centre for natural science and high technology.

LU YONGXIANG, President(Chinese Academy of Sciences)said:" We selected some eight thousand personnel in our academy as well as over two hundred excellent overseas scientists for the innovation program."

The first phase set up a batch of research projects in nine fields including agriculture technology, population and health, energy and space.

Total investment reached seventeen million yuan. Meanwhile, the academy also kicked off projects in cutting-edge research. So far, over seven hundred research results have been classified as breakthroughs on the domestic front.

The first phase will end in December. And the second phase will kick off early next year and last for five years. The Chinese Academy of Sciences hopes the Innovation Program can propel China up to a place among the world's top ten in scientific studies.
