4th Asia-Europe Young Leaders Symposium Ends

The fourth Asia-Europe Young Leaders Symposium (AEYLS) ended Friday in Ireland's mid- western city of Limerick, with the central theme of the four-day symposium being the knowledge society: challenges and opportunities for Asia-Europe partnership in the 21st century.

During the symposium held at Limerick University, over 100 delegates from 25 member countries of the Asia-Europe Meeting ( ASEM) discussed the evolution of the knowledge economy, e-commerce, electronic government, education in the knowledge economy and Asian and European perspectives on corporate cultures and organizational strategy.

The annual AEYLS is one of the follow-up activities of the first ASEM in 1996 in Bangkok. It was established to bring together young leaders from Asia and Europe to promote mutual understanding between the two regions. The first AEYLS took place in Japan in 1997. Subsequently, symposia were also held in Austria (1998) and South Korea (1999).

These symposia play a key role in the ongoing efforts of 10 Asian countries (Brunei, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), the 15 European Union countries and the European Commission to develop a greater level of mutual understanding and cooperation.
