Sand-Control Project Launched Around Beijing

China will start a five-year sand- control project on the outskirts of the capital to improve the environment, the State Forestry Administration announced Friday.

The project is part of a national sand control programs. The project involves 116 counties in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province, covering an area of some 464,000 square km.

The project will be first carried out on a trial basis in some regions this year, and then be expanded during 2001-2005.

When the project is completed, the coverage rate of trees and grass will increase from 13.36 percent to 27 percent.

The Administration is to establish a monitoring system to enhance supervision in areas especially those hit by frequent sandstorms.
